Urban Forest Project San Francisco

Nearly finished with the basic layout of my final for my web class. The project is creating a site for The Urban Forest Project : San Francisco. It's an outdoor exhibition of artist made banners promoting greener living and bettering how we interact with our environment. Feels like I've been doing a lot of green friendly piece, and I can't say that I don't love the subject matter.

Wireframes made with Mockingbird! Mockingbird is something that my friend, Matt, showed me a few weeks ago and I can't thank him enough for doing so. It's an intuitive web-based wireframe application that has pretty much every element you could need, making it REALLY simple to think about content over design in that first stage.

I wrote them a little love note because I was so happy with how it made me as I worked out my plan of action.

Take Pride in America Logos

Round two of logo revisions, I really like my last concept that I came up with of the words being part of the landscape. This project is actually for Take Pride in America, and they are rebranding in hopes to capture a younger demographic to get them outside and volunteer in our countries many of state parks.

The only thing I'm not feeling with this logo right now is the "AMERICA" bit, I'm not sure if I want to break up that line and fill it with mismatched font heights. Worth a shot I guess.

UPDATE:

Not going to lie. I really like it, it reminds me of Saul Bass. I'll do two versions for the class to decide for me. It might be a little too "off-kilter" for the client.

Dealing with the Dilemma of Great Work and Great Friends

There are so many times where we often hear that teaming up with a friend to create a project is a terrible idea. In most cases this is definitely true, unless your friend is also a creative professional. We've dealt with our nightmare, as well as our dream clients, and when it comes time for needing to commission someone to make something for us we can be more than empathetic.

Currently I am in progress with a site for Yaritza Colón. She is a more than fantastic photographer from my old stomping grounds of New England, more specifically Boston. I've watched her style develop from photographing musical events, portraits, and now her specialty of our most memorable moments. Soon enough her work will be able to easily accessed with the portfolio site I'm building and designing for her.

So how do we know it is a great idea or a terrible idea to work with our friends or family?

Make it clear of the process
Treat them like you would any other client, but feel free to divulge the nitty gritty details we oft leave out about process. Tell them if you are using their site as a practice run for some great new CMS you want to try, or even better, CSS3 and XHTML2. Tell them all of these things, because honesty is, indeed still, the best policy.

Set up a schedule and stick with it
Everyone wants something done yesterday, but none of us want to be rushed in our own projects. Explain that we have check points that we intend to reach, and how long each stretch will most likely be. Also impress on them that they have certain responsibilities to the project as well. Be it making sure that they get in their deposit, have the content readily available, and ABSOLUTELY approve of each step. Which brings up a great point.

Have a crystal clear understanding of what is needed
No site should be a series of happy accidents. We aren't painting a picture, we are making an interactive piece of communication. Where we often draft up proposals based on briefs we receive from more established clients, our friends and family probably don't have this down to a science. Hell, we probably don't either. Be involved in making their experience as easy and (happily) memorable as possible. Sure, your friends are probably going to recommend you anyways, but wouldn't it be better if it came as a testimonial? On this project we have had several dialogs educating each other on our relative industries, each time gaining more insight with every word. At this point, through asking the right questions and taking notes of her feelings about what makes a great web experience, I've gotten something more valuable than a brief. Although in the future, when I'm not able to keep the dialogs up for as long, I would create a questionnaire that would effectively do the same thing.

Charge accordingly
Unless this is your first site ever, it shouldn't be free. Ever. Giving our friends and family a steep price break isn't helping either of us. They aren't getting a real world example of the industry, and we are slaving away hours and hours for something that we might actually resent later for the low cost it ended up being. One of my first freelance ventures I made it clear that it was a learning project for me and that I wanted nothing more than to please the client. At the end, I think I got paid like $3.00 an hour after the nonstop changes, and you wont find it in my portfolio.

So, don't shy away from every aunt and uncle that asks you to take the time to do what you do best for them. Just be sure to approach it as a job, put in every bit of effort to make it a stand out project, and get that dollar that you deserve.

For my 20th Century Art History class the final assignments were a choice between writing a paper on modern design and how it takes its influence from previous art movements during the 20th century, and creating a chart that illustrates the flow of movements and how the evolution of artistic principles occurred as a result. I usually always take the write the paper option just because I know that a paper is about 4 hours of work and I generally need to use as much time as I can gather to focus on my core classes and their end of the semester projects.

In this case I chose to make a chart, but only because it gave me the much needed opportunity to practice more with Flash and AS3. The chart as assigned was basically explained as paper, glitter, and whatever other art majors use. I asked him before embarking on my knowledge quest.

Before really settling on the format and design, I revisited a beloved concept for organization: mind maps. I spent a few hours researching on technology to construct an interactive mind map and completely fell in love with the spring graph that I found on Ruben Swieringa's blog. As I explored his source code and the references he provided for his own project, I discovered that I don't have access to Flex Builder 3 at school (or so I thought... but that's another story) and attempted to figure out how to use the Flex SDK provided by Adobe. I don't even know how much time I "wasted" trying to understand using the SDK and the terminal in sync. So, I abandoned that concept and devised a new layout for the information that I was trying to design for.

I was drawing my own mind maps on paper laying out the movement of art and it's concepts, and stumbled upon a fantastic diagram by Alfred H. Barr Jr. Barr was an art historian and the very first director of the MOMA NYC. I used the arrow concept (and some of his placements) to build my interactive chart.

I used the Tweener and Web Devils classes for all of my movements and interactions.

This was made over the summer. The box is constructed from Davey board, and plexiglas. The interior is glass marbles, and rub down transfers on paper. It's an interesting juxtaposition of our working parts, and industrial working parts. Mostly parts from a door, and skeletal bones and organs. My intention was to align the concepts of open door policies and the complexity of the human condition.

So voila, c'est fini. A week early, and I am really pleased with it. Going home to sleep, and seeing it the next day and not wanting to make any changes excites me. As I mentioned yesterday, there is an edition of five, so I have only constructed this one.

I might hold onto them, or put them on to my Etsy so people can have the experience (I don't want to say "fun,") of constructing their own piece.

Now, I have to delve into After Effects and complete my Motion Graphics final.

Better photos of the final construction tomorrow, but here is a preview of my final for silkscreen. I went to a gallery opening for Katy Stone last month and fell in love with her work. She creates three dimensional space with transparent and opaque layers. I wanted to explore that concept and silkscreened hand-drawn type and autographic shapes onto acetate and tissue paper. Well, Grafix Dura Lar. Using a limited color palette of light blues, warm gray, near black, and white I replicated my screens to have five runs of each color. There are enough runs to create five of these sculpture/books. The one I sewed together today is approximately three feet long.

It's layers create tension because the components are loosely rendered by hand and the textures and colors keep the eye moving back and forth in the space between them. The acetate allows the viewer to peer through the piece, but also keeps it dynamic by reflecting light and changing the appearance of the individual layers. The ink is completely matte, and the contrast between ink and substrate is high.

These pictures don't do it an ounce of justice, so just consider yourself teased.

Reminded by the need to wear mittens whilst riding my bike that it is, in fact, December, I have redesigned the blog. I will have a real devoted portfolio site by Spring.

Currently, I am neck deep in finals. School has a dwindling two weeks remaining of this semester and I am definitely feeling it.

I have a wedding invitation project that I can't wait to post about.
A wonderful interior designer that I am working on a site with. Her work is fantastic! It makes me miss the industry.
And, of course, an empty Etsy shop that has lots of new prints that just need to be photographed.

Archer, is a playful slab-serif and it is gorgeous. It has featherlight weights that in large sizes would be amazing to create almost a texture with your body or headlines. There are small, rounds at the serifs.

Earry Canal Tunnel Book

I finished summer semester three weeks ago and have a bunch to post about. I FINALLY got a better camera and love using it. Therefore, I don't expect my updates to be so sporadic as previously. I am by no means about to start calling myself a photographer, but having a nice camera is exciting.

This previous semester I took Book Arts and Digital Imaging. Visually, I am more proud of what I made in Book Arts. This is my tunnel book "Earry Canal" with hand drawn and collage elements. As you look into the book there are stamped hands with pointed fingers, cut paper ear wax, and eventually a hand drawn drum with sticks. This is probably my favorite piece I made in the class.

Sensory Appeal

The fourth assignment for Concept was to use texture to communicate "pain" or "pleasure." The first time around on this project I used stiletto heals for my "pain" portion. The heals themselves were incredibly shiny, black, and more or less screamed sex appeal. Sure, they might be uncomfortable to wear, but aesthetically they are very smooth and more in line with pleasure. A trip to a thrift store on 16th St in the Mission district found me my painful texture. Just thinking about putting that sweater on ever again makes my neck itch.

The third assignment for Concept was to photograph a vehicle and prepare the photos to be used by a company called "Curves Ahead" in print ads. The company is assumedly large and does not need copy of introduction. I originally used my Bianchi San Jose, but although using a bike would help communicate separation from car culture, greener living, fitness, yadda yadda the on emphasis was supposed to be on shape. As sexy as I think my bike may be, it is comprised of hard steel and straight lines. There is a car dealership on Van Ness that was nice enough to let me in and snap a few photos of a gorgeous Lambourgini. I'm not a fan of cars anymore, but this car was dripping with sex appeal. The curves that it was sporting were both feminine and chiseled like a man's jaw.

Viewpoint

The second assignment in Concept was to capture a building in such a way as to make the viewer want to visit it. To be honest, I can not remember what building this is, it is downtown in San Francisco and is home to a bank. US Bank? Regardless, the architecture is what attracted me, and I captured exactly what drew me in. The combination of hewn stone, hard angles, fragile glass structures, and organic line work on a building were completely gorgeous and intriguing to me. Taking a squared, smoothed, and harsh material such as granite and utilize it for building looming structures can often feel so lifeless, and sterile. The architect kept his materials in mind and was able to take the edge off by carving circles and curves. I used to work as a designer for a tile and stone showroom, and it's great to see how beautiful those materials can be in action.

Fastenate Print Ads

Our first assignment in Concept this spring semester was to create four print ads to pitch to the fictitious paperclip company, Fastenate. These were my designs, I was really pleased with them when I was first working on them. They were comp'ed in Photoshop (which is unusual for me), and we primarily based off of scans I made of cut paper and paperclips. The exception is the "don't you look smart" design, which was done entirely in Illustrator.

School has been out since May 17, it's been a good two weeks since I have attempted anything within my major besides download sitepoint's "The Photoshop Anthology: 101 Web Design Tricks & Techniques" by Corrie Haffly. Literally, just opened it and have very little to say about it currently. It's free (for now!), so if you are interested , get it now.

I am also skimming through Ben Hunt's "Save The Pixel: The Art of Simple Web Design." There is a sample chapter available for download on his site, and it definitely seems well worth the money. He has a very no-nonsense style that I think a lot of us as web designers need to re-adhere to. With Web 2.0 and gradient madness, and just stock options that it almost seems that people are picking from, it's nice to read a voice that knows very well what it takes. Immediately, I am adopting the term JFDI (Just Fucking Do It). Ben has has a great tone for the material.

I have so much to update and upload, but unfortunately, I left my precious external hard-drive in Seattle last weekend and (bad practice!) all of my final versions from my Concept class, as well as my Design Tech class are on it.

I opened a, currently empty, Etsy shop. This will in the future be filled with prints of my original artwork, as well as crafted goods for people and our better halves (dogs!)

My summer semester starts June 16th, and I am frantically trying to assemble a portfolio... well frantic is not the correct word. But regardless, I am trying to REMAKE my portfolio that was lost somehow in Maine at my father's house.

Everyday for the next two weeks I am hoping to make a post of what I have been up to this semester. I have been struggling to compose a hybrid between a deer and a elephant for the last two weeks or so, and in my sketches I transformed my deer antlers into moose antlers. Eventually, probably induced by recent musical selections and other ideas for additional projects, a new hybrid was birthed. This is somewhat a homage to my home state of Maine, and is my attempt at turning being homesick into productive energy. Etching on 4x5 zinc plate, edition of 15.

This is an edition of five, and I use the term "edition" loosely. This was created using a polyester lithograph plate and the plate was determined to make my thousands of shade lines into a much more sinister, over-inked mess. The first image is one of my initial prints onto newsprint, and although it is essentially perfect, it being on newsprint makes it worthless. the remained look nearly identical to the lithograph plate I have pictured. I'm kind of in love with it. I wasn't impressed when it initially started to fill in my line work, but I just let the process happen and I am more than happy with it now. These are not for sale (sorry!).

I have redesigned Base Aesthetic, instead of finishing the "tentacurl" pronto plate this morning. This is more than likely just going to be temporary until I get my portfolio site up, but it is definitely in sync with my sketchbooks and mind-maps that I make during my creative process. Things seem to come full circle now-a-days. There was a class recently in my Concept course that we discussed what it takes to be a great designer. Knowing your art history and being a sponge while observing the world. Bob showed us a reel that had launched someone's career and it was a gorgeous take on traditional Japanese imagery and incorporating it in a new way.

One thing that really stuck out to me was in the reel, the clouds were very thin and elongated. To admit my ignorance, I had never seen this rendition of clouds before. While I was in Seattle in February, nearly a week after watching that movie, I visited the SAM and hanging on the wall was a tradtional Japanese theatre komono... With the clouds!

I was conducting a wee experiment on sleep deprivation, dehydration, starvation, and hypercconsciousness (http://liu.english.ucsb.edu/wiki1/index.php/Hyperconsciousness:_Creative_Mode:_Research_Report). And had, up until 3:00 am today, not slept, ate, or drank for 45 hours. So close to a full two days, but I gave in. I wasn't exactly sure as to what I was trying to output over the duration of this week, but I had everything out. I had two guitar set ups, transcription papers, prepped boards to paint on, charcoal paper, watercolor paper, color-aid, newsprint, newspaper, fabric swatches, and most of the "fixin's" to accompany those mediums.
What I made yesterday was cute, but no where near what I was hoping for. It very well could just be a study. This is a wallet that I told my boyfriend I would make for him about two weeks ago.

Wondercon 2008

I went to this beautiful event yesterday, at the Moscone Center South, in San Francisco. I had little expectations, considering I have attended a comic book convention in several years. I have a control issue when it comes to certain series (Batman the Detective, Conan the Barbarian, Uncanny Xmen, and most current: Marvel Zombies), and anything related to Sailor Moon.
It's a little embarrassing to think about a five year old me falling in love with this leggy blonde while I'm at my babysitter's waiting for the bus. I remember that it came on at 6:00am for a while, and I wouldn't go back to sleep after my parents dropped me off at 5:30am because I didn't want to miss that rerun. My obsession is more on the healthy side now, I only pick up a few new pieces a year.
Back to WonderCon! The Moscone was PACKED. The amount of people in costumes that clearly took at least several weeks was impressive. Amongst the most impressive included two babes fully representing the elves of Lodos War, Doctor Who, FatBoy (the burgers...), a very little girl as Sailor Jupiter (kawaii!), and... SAILOR MOON! Yikes. I need to turn down my inner nerd.

Although there were tons of great finds that I definitely could have thrown down some green for, I exercised every ounce of restraint that I had and only picked up a copy of "Hand Job: A Catalog of Type" by Michael Perry. As much as I covet an original paste-up panel from Albert Moy based in Bayside, New York, I need all of my interest to be focused on becoming the best designer I can muster.
"Hand Job" looks absolutely gorgeous. I'm sure that I will write about more in depth once I finish the two books I'm currently working on.
And finally, I discovered Last Gasp which is a graphic book store. They are hosting a release party for "Best Erotic Comics" at the Cartoon Art Museum this coming Thursday.

My charger for my iBook has gone kaput! Quel bummer. I haven't been updating because my bigger projects have been presents to my friends/loved ones... and I can't post from home. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr.
This is a CREDO Mobile poster that is currently on BART. I hope the color translates well. It is a slightly desaturated blue and desaturated orange. Both have been modified by adding black, which is easier on the eyes and makes the poster able to keep your attention longer.

Craft-minded; A Guide To Puppy Stitch and Bitch Fashion

When I have free time, and for a while I had nothing but free time, I recreate things. Recycling, I think is the greatest idea ever. So I picked up a baby onesie from Goodwill for a dollar while I was visiting my Mom's, and have just recently gotten around to revamping it for Villainy to wear.
So onto the tutorial...

Step One: Do not do anything until after washing and drying the clothing to make sure that it will not change shape after alteration. Preshrink, preshrink, preshrink! Take the unfitted onesie, flip it inside out, and get your loving model to try it on. Gather the material around the ventral (tummy!) side of the pup. I used a Sharpie to baste-mark where the garment needed to be taken in. I would NOT recommend using a Sharpie, or any sort of marker. I only used this because I wasn't sure if it was going to work or not, and it was more just a test. I used small dots on both sides in three different locations.

Step Two: Remove the garment, and fold in half so that the dots that you had previously marked are touching. Connect the dots, and pin the line. This is where I would make a judgement call on where the shirt is going to end. I sketched mine on to the shirt so I could make a visual decision. Sew down your new line to create your ventral seam. Make sure you back-tack at the beginning and end of your new seam, this is going on a puppy after all! See below:

In the last image, you can see the artifacts left behind by that pesky Sharpie. What was I thinking? Ha.

Step Three: I used a zigzag stitch pattern inside of my seam to give the shirt a bit more resistance against the movements and strain my puppy was going to be putting it though. Trim your latest seam. Also, cut your shirt to the length that you want it to be, allowing for hemming, so I would recommend at least a half inch.

Step Four: Pin your hem, and sew along the bottom of the shirt. Make sure to be careful around the new seams, and again back-tack!

Et voici: c'est fini.

Most importantly, take pictures of your puppies.

More Linoleum Prints - Hot Off the Press!

We were told in my printmaking class to pick two objects that make a statement... My house isn't exactly full of interesting objects currently, so I walked a around a bit and decided on something a bit more iconic. It also relates to what I've been thinking about lately, my finances. My original sketches were very realistic, and because linoleum doesn't lend itself to photorealism very well, I warped my image so that it could be more expressionistic. So voila: my piggy bank and hammer that I got from Ikea.

...Since I have worked on anything printmaking related. I'm pretty sure that whenever I get a set of cutting tools, one of the first things I cut is on of my finger tips. Safety last! These are trial runs of my current favorite subject, tentacles, off of a linoleum block. I really enjoy working in relief, it gives you a sense of how value really works. Working backwards to expose light is always a challenge, even if just a very subtle one.

When I attended the Maine College of Art, the new media department was very, very, small. Amongst those who made up the fab five (maybe six) was Sarah Lomba who is now creating the adorable incarnate.

Reunion is a band from back home in Portland, Maine. They asked me to design their album artwork for their self-titled. They knew exactly what they wanted: black,white, and red robots in an older cartoon style.

Troublemaker

Troublemaker has hired me to do a shirt design for them. The basic premise of it was to be raw, and bad-ass,

"uh, squids? skulls? violence? squid skeletons that are committing violence? anything is cool."

I've lovingly been referring to this work in progress as the "boner squid," which, unfortunately in it's current state, might imply a bit more than just being comprised of skeletal parts. There are several ideas floating about in my sea of thoughts... WHAT is this squid going to be doing? After meditating and prompting friends, the list is looking promising.
